The unveiling of Aston Manor Primary School’s new multipurpose sports field and pavilion brought great joy and pride to the learners and staff of the school.
Although construction work had been completed a few months ago, the unveiling was only on August 8.
The 70m x 32m multipurpose sports field accommodates two sporting codes.
“Our field was built in such a way that it is four netball courts and one big hockey field in one,” said Werner Botha, school principal.
“Previously we had only two netball courts and with the new field four netball matches can be played simultaneously. We also didn’t have hockey at the school and we wanted to introduce it; now the school has a hockey field and the learners can start playing.”
The new pavilion next to the sports field will ensure that all spectators are comfortable as they watch netball and hockey matches.

Botha said it took six months to build the pavilion and about two months to complete the field. The pavilion was named after the previous school principal, Leslie John Steenkamp, who spent 35 years of his life at the school before retiring in 2017.
“I am truly overwhelmed and humbled. It is such a privilege and honour to have the pavilion named after me,” said Steenkamp.
“I am proud with how far the school has come and the new developments are heart-warming. I’m looking forward to more growth and greatness for the school in years to come.”
The Ekurhuleni North District director, Noncebo Ntuta, was also at the unveiling.
“I am lost for words and excited. The change rooms have core values that are enshrined in the walls which is amazing on its own,” said Ntuta.
“Sport is one of the things that unites us and builds us to have respect and honour people. I am excited about the future. I will bring the district netball team here to play against the teachers.”
Netball matches were also played during the unveiling which caused for some great fun and cheering by the learners.
“This was a great event and thank you to everyone who helped make it the huge success that it was,” said Botha.
“We also upgraded our cricket nets and unveiled four new nets.”
In March, the school also opened its new swimming pool.
