Discovery restores Zitikeni learners’ pride
Zitikeni Secondary School receives donation of sanitary pads and school shoes.
Discovery’s Centurion branch visited Zitikeni Secondary School to donate sanitary pads and school shoes to all Grade Nine learners.
They started at the garden, ploughing weeds before watering the vegetables. Parents were also invited to witness the donations.
Johhny Skosana, chairperson of the school governing body (SGB), said they are grateful to Discovery for adopting the school and their help is forever appreciated.
“In May, we started planting in our garden after they helped us to redo our garden. As parents, we are grateful that they once more managed to donate sanitary pads and school shoes to our children,” said Skosana.
Kgaugelo Shaku said: “I am part of the Discovery programme learnerships. It feels great to be part of the Discovery team giving back, it is always a pleasure to give back.”
She also gave friendly advice to matriculates about the type of friends they should associate with to obtain good marks.
“You need to focus on your studies and associate yourself with friends who will influence you to study. You cannot abandon your goals,” added Shaku.

Pamela Njamela, Discovery cooperative services manager, said the relationship between the school and the company began last year when the school called for support.
“The garden was born from when we heard that over and above the need for the shoes, there was also a need for feeding children,” said Njamela.
Njamela added that they ran different initiatives to raise funds for the shoes and the sanitary pads.
“We sell food and have market days that helps us to raise funds,” explains Njamela.
Deputy principal of Zitikeni Secondary Motithi Thereza Maimela said this support will help the school to obtain better marks, as the learners will gain confidence in full uniform.
“The SGB is hands on in the garden to sustain the garden produce. To Discovery, we thank them because they have done a lot for us.
“They adopted seven of last year’s matric top achieving learners into their learnership programmes, and today they donate about 400 school shoes to our Grade Nine learners and shower our girl learners with sanitary pads,” she said.
“We also opened to other stakeholders who are willing to help us achieve our 100 per cent pass rate objectives every year,” said Maimela.
