More areas plunged into darkness this morning

The City of Ekurhuleni has not yet communicated restoration times

Temporary network configuration is currently taking place in order to restore power to suburbs which had been without electricity since Friday morning.

This has resulted in more suburbs going off at around 9am on Saturday morning.

“Tunnel fire” could have caused major power outage in Kempton

According to ward councillor André du Plessis, he received a message at 9.15am this morning, reading:

The City of Ekurhuleni wants to apologise to the residents of Kempton Park that are affected by the electricity outage. We are doing everything in our power to restore supply as soon as it is practically possible.

“One of our main 66kV cables that runs through a tunnel is receiving urgent attention and repairs are taking longer because of limited access and the actual work that needs to be done.

“Technicians are currently busy on site with temporary network configuration in order to start restoring customers on other available supply. We anticipate that some customers may be restored very soon while we are monitoring consumption to avoid tripping other customers on over-load.

“As areas are being restored we will provide regular updates.”

Ward councillor Jaco Terblanche said a faulty cable between Aston Manor and Glen Marais had never been repaired two months ago. It was only by-passed.

“Now there is a cable fault between Aston Manor and Cargo. I was told the metro could do nothing on Friday as there was too much smoke in the tunnel where the cable burnt,” said Terblanche on Saturday morning.

“My observation is that the problem is serious and I believe power will only be restored next week.”

None of this information could be confirmed with the City of Ekurhuleni.
