Corruption will not be tolerated at the new state-of-the-art Tembisa Licensing Hub and those found on the wrong side of the law will face the full might of it.
This was a stern warning by Minister of Transport Fikile Mbalula on Monday during the official opening of this licensing precinct situated in Esselen Park.
“We are definitely not going to tolerate any corrupt tendencies in this centre. Just a friendly reminder to all those who will be working here that big brother (hidden cameras) is watching your every move. So if you were thinking about any corrupt activities here, just be warned. You better do it elsewhere and not here,” said Mbalula.
This R60-million facility will be a one-stop shop comprising a licensing unit, motor vehicle registration authority, and vehicle and driver testing centres.
Addressing the gathering, Mbalula went on to say that this is a first of its kind facility in a previously disadvantaged community.
“This is just what this area and its surroundings needed. This facility will not only cover Tembisa, but will also tend to the needs of motorists from Kempton Park North, the City of Tshwane and City of Johannesburg off the R21 and Olifantsfontein highway. As the Department of Transport, we are proud of this city’s achievement and we congratulate Ekurhuleni for its service to the people,” Mbalula said.
The city has already begun working on two more licensing hubs, in Katlehong and Kwatsaduza.
Both licensing hubs are said to be at 30 per cent complete.
Also speaking during this official opening, the city’s MMC for Transport and Fleet Management, Clr Palesa Nkunjana, said this facility will bring much-needed relief to the community of Tembisa.
“It will also relieve other licensing centres and will also save our communities the burden of having to travel long distances for such services. As a city, we are committed to bringing services closer to the people and this is one practical example,” she said.
