Norkem, Birchleigh North get new street names

Three people were arrested in February this year in connection with the theft of numerous signs.

Finally, stolen street name signs are being replaced in Norkem Park and Birchleigh North.

Three people were arrested in February this year in connection with the theft of numerous signs in these areas.

According to ward councillor Desmond McKenzie, the thefts left residents furious, having streets without identifiable street names for months.

“Street names are not a luxury, but essential for everyone to reach their destination. The process to replace the stolen street name signs has taken months with lots of reasons from the municipality, including not being able to find an appropriate contractor,” said McKenzie.

Kempton Express reported about the thefts in February when a video went viral showing two men taking down a street sign in Norkem Park in one minute and 27 seconds.

Capt Lesibana Molokomme, the then spokesperson for Norkem Park SAPS, at the time said it was believed the group operated in Kempton Park, Edenvale and perhaps even Boksburg and Germiston.

He said investigations at the time led police to a pawn shop where they uncovered the suspects’ addresses.
