WATCH: It’s a wrap for the matric class of 2019 as they collect their papers

Matric results are one of the things that are greatly anticipated at the beginning of every year.

The learners, along with their families, friends, teachers and principals, eagerly wait to see the kind of results that were produced by a whole year’s work.

Express was able to visit some of the high schools in Kempton Park on January 8 to get the vibe and capture some of the moments as learners collected their statements.

Among the schools visited were Hoërskool Jeugland, Spartan High School, Hoërskool Birchleigh, Norkem Park High School, Hoërskool Kempton Park and Sir Pierre Van Ryneveld High School.

Spartan High School had 65 matrics sit in the final examinations and managed to get a 92.3% pass rate and an university exemption of 41.66%.

“We dropped by 0.8% from last year, but I must say that the performance in terms of symbol distribution really improved, even for the Grade 11s,” said Linda Oberholzer, principal of Spartan High School.

“I know they dropped, but they worked really hard. If I didn’t have the staff I have that will walk the extra mile, then we wouldn’t have achieved. Going forward, we will carry on the path of motivating and supporting the learners.”

Hoërskool Birchleigh obtained an 87% pass rate and a 48.8% university exemption rate, with 309 students having sat in the Grade 12 final examinations.

André Gloy, principal of Hoërskool Birchleigh, said they dropped from last year’s 93.2%.

“We took a drop, which is very unfortunate as we were hoping for better results. We congratulate our learners and we are already working on plans to get a better pass rate this year,” said Gloy.

The Sir Pierre Van Ryneveld matric class of 2019 was 232 in total and recorded a pass rate of 90.5%. The university exemption was 36%.

The school principal, Margaret Wrigley, was disappointed with not getting a 100% pass rate, but was proud of the learners who worked hard and passed the exams.

“Despite us not reaching our 100% pass rate expectation, I’m proud of the teachers and learners,” said Wrigley.

Lesego Mashego, deputy principal at Norkem Park High School, told Express their learners did well, but there was room for improvement as the learners reached a 90.2% pass rate, which was a drop from last year’s 94.8%.

The university exemption was 33.33% and 266 learners wrote the final examinations.

“We will work very hard and try to provide extra tuition. We will try working in extra time in the afternoons, weekends and holidays,” said Mashego.

“We will also try to seek assistance from outside where possible to help support the learners. What is also important is that we get support from the parents to help make our belief for 100% a reality. Our motto is: we believe and God will work on our doubts.”
