Tembisa public schools and learners performed well during the 2019 examinations. Of all the high schools that registered learners for the final exam, not one performed below the 70% mark.
According to the Gauteng Department of Education, these schools have contributed greatly in keeping the provincial flag flying high. The province achieved an impressive 87.2%, making it the second best performing province in the country after the Free State, which obtained an 88.4% pass rate. Furthermore, Gauteng recorded the highest bachelor’s degree passes at 44.5%. Contributing to this impressive record were schools such as Tembisa West Secondary and Jiyana Secondary. Both shared the spoils at the top.
The two schools produced an impressive 97.7% pass rate, surpassing hot favourites such as Esselen Park, which attained a 100% pass rate in the 2018 results.
At Jiyana Secondary 172 learners sat for the final exams and 168 passed, while Tembisa West Secondary had 132 learners writing with 129 passing their exams. Both schools reached the 97.7% mark.
In 2018 Tembisa West achieved a 91% pass rate, while Jiyana Secondary attained a 98.6% pass rates.
Trailing these two was Bokamoso Secondary with 97.1%.
Bokamoso Secondary had 138 learners writing the final exams and 134 learners passing. In 2018, the Makhulong Section School achieved a 91.6% pass rate, an improvement of about 6%.
Making it to the top 10 list in Tembisa was Ivory Park Secondary School in third position with a 96.2% pass rate, an improvement of about 1% compared with their 2018 results of 95.6%. Another school making it to the top 10 was Esselen Park with 94.7%.
The surprise package of the year has to go to Phomolong Secondary School, which jumped from 86% in 2018 to 93.7% in 2019, an improvement of about 7%.
Phomolong Secondary had 205 learners sitting for the exam and 192 passed.
