Speed hump causes Tsenelong gogo’s house to flood

Tembisa residents left furious after councillor failed to arrive to assess situation at Gogo Modise’s house

Gogo Augustine Modise, a resident of Tsenelong Section, pleads with community leaders to remove the speed hump outside her gate that causes her house to flood every time there is heavy rain.

The storm on Sunday afternoon left the Modise’s house with floating furniture. Gogo Modise said every time there is heavy rain it is a nightmare in her house because the speed hump redirects the water into her yard.

“We have reported the problem to our councillor on many occasions, but nothing has been done,” she said.

Gogo Modise also said that since 1975 when she moved into the house she had similar scenarios where a sewage pipe would burst and the waste water would flow into her yard, but that was fixed by the previous government.

This burning issue in Ward Seven in Tembisa left many residents furious.

Gogo Modise’s neighbour, Basetsana Moloto, was also affected by the same rainstorm.

Tracey Dimakatso Mahlake, a tenant at Gogo Moloto’s house, mops the floor after the water level had decreased.

“Many people rent at this house, losing them would mean a big loss to us,” Moloto said.

“Imagine it rains when there are only children in the house, they could get electrified.

“This is not what my granny Selena Moloto, former member of ANC Women’s League fought for. We voted for the councillor, now it’s time he delivers,” she said.

Peter Modise, a family member of Gogo Modise, said he drove from Witbank to come and assist with the conditions in Gogo’s house.

“This condition has been existing since I was living in the house with Gogo. The damage cannot be fully assessed yet, but every piece of furniture is wet,” he said.

Ward Seven Clr Thabang Jiyane said there are two departments tasked to investigate the cause of this problem as 12 houses were affected by the storm.

“We, as the municipality, are waiting on the the Roads and Stormwater and Disaster Management teams to submit their reports so we can find solutions to the problem,” said Jiyane.
