Girl Power SA leader from Phomolong talks ‘girl stuff’
Phomolong-based young woman bags three awards from Girl Power NPO.
Refilwe Mtembu, an award-winning Girl Power SA leader and ambassador for 2019, shares her success story.
The 20-year-old from Phomolong, Tembisa, is currently in her fourth year for her media operations management qualification at Boston Media House.
She has three awards under her name, namely the Girl Power leader of the year, Girl Power SA ambassador 2019, and rising star award, as well as a certificate of participation.
According to Mtembu, Girl Power SA is an NPO which started in 2016 and she was part of it since its inception.
“Girl Power SA is a platform for girl leaders to communicate and address issues that they face and come up with solutions on how to deal with them,” Mtembu said.
“We are an NPO which helps girls develop leadership skills and advocacy. We help girls to be leaders in communities and schools with the objective of empowering them economically.

“We are divided in categories and age groups, we have TAGs (Teach A Girl), they range from 10-14 and they focus in their school work. We also have GEMs (Girls Empowered), these are in high school and they focus on different campaigns, and we also have Campus leaders who are our girl power leaders who focus on matters which affect their age group, which is from 19-25 and they have their own clubs in their varsities or colleges.
“In a year, we have campaigns which help us raise awareness on issues that most affect us. In 2020, we want to focus on bringing change in Tembisa and have girl clubs where we will invite girls to join us and be empowered to also empower others wherever they go.
“The campaigns include the Red Dot, a menstrual health related campaign; Dear Girl Power, where young girls send their letters asking for our help; Sisterhood, which will be an online platform to reach other girls and build sisterhood; Peace, which focuses on uniting boys and girls but this one is for primary schools; and Reading is empowering, which is a book club.
“The events also include GELs, a girls economic empowerment summit; Girls leaders gathering, where we evaluate the progress of our leaders; Girls on a leadership (GOAL); Leadership camp, where leaders are trained and given tasks for the year; and Rise Awards, where we award our leaders for what they have been doing throughout the year.”
