SPCA impostor couple goes missing after only three days of community service

Couple found soliciting donations using SPCA name were given 14 weeks to work at the society

Emotions of disappointment have overcome staff members of Kempton Park SPCA after they were repeatedly let down by a woman they sought to help avoid incarceration for misrepresentation.

A 40-year-old woman was caught red-handed by SPCA personnel at an intersection in Pomona on December 2. She was collecting money for her own good but using the society’s name to solicit donations.

Although Kempton Park SAPS was called to the scene, no case was opened due to the good heart of SPCA’s manager Kira Sparrow.

The woman was with her husband when she was apprehended. He admitted to being involved in the act of soliciting donations. However, it was the woman who was arrested as she had been caught in the act.

Feeling pity for the couple, Sparrow said the SPCA opted to rather let the woman and her husband each render a 200-hour community service at the local SPCA.

Sparrow told Express the couple failed to their scheduled hours of service.

“The couple has only come for three days with one of those days not being a complete day,” said Sparrow.

“They worked two full days, but on the third day they left before their time without telling any staff member they were leaving. We have not seen them since, and we can’t get hold of them on three of the numbers they gave us.”

Sparrow said she was about to report the matter to the police, when her colleague, Charmaine Joubert, informed her of a call she received from a person who alleges to be a resident at a local shelter which is where they (couple) allegedly live.

“Joubert said someone called the society and said the couple received a call to inform them that there was an emergency they needed to attend to in Cape Town.

“The person also said the couple asked to be given until the end of January and they would return in February to continue working. I am very disappointed, but we will give them until the end of January, and should they not return, we will take the matter further,” said Sparrow.

Information has also surfaced that the couple no longer live at the last address they gave to SPCA, they were allegedly last seen leaving that said address on the morning of December 28.

The 200 hours each translate to about 14 weeks.
