Clayville teen to tackle youth challenges through documentary
Raised by a single mother, Mncube was fortunate to enrol at Hope Fountain Combined School, a private school in Midrand
Lesley Mncube (17) from Clayville, Tembisa, aims to change the mindset of the youth through his new documentary Survival 1 I am Lesley which tackles daily life challenges faced by young people, including depression.
Mncube recently dropped his promo video for his documentary.
He said growing up in a township made him realise that people do not have access to much information which results into a lot of dreams being shattered.
“I have found ways to inspire others and talk to masses at the same time through this documentary. I worked with great minds to make this documentary a success and we are still calling for more people.
“Through the project, we address the struggles of daily hustlers, the women who collect cans, boys who cash in scraps for cash, those who wake every morning to catch the first taxi to work. We address social issues as well, including depression and suicide.”
Raised by a single mother, Mncube was fortunate to enrol at Hope Fountain Combined School, a private school in Midrand. Currently in Grade 12, Mncube said he was fortunate to attend school in Midrand because he was able to make connections with friends from different places.
“For me, it was easy to identify what exactly we are not doing right in the hood. Once I was able to see what people from Midrand are able to do, I knew I had to channel that power of positivity to try and implement change to the kasi brains.
“This documentary does not discriminate against any age group, the aim is to try and inspire and empower everyone from all corners of the country.
“We call on people to come join us and add their ideas and visions because we aim to gather young, innovative minds under one roof,” said Mncube.
The documentary will air on all social media platforms in April. Mncube urges anyone who wishes to join his team to contact him on Facebook at Lesley ZM.
