Kempton learners, schools among top achievers at awards

The executive mayor honoured the best-performing matriculants of the Class of 2019 at Alberton Civic Centre on January 29.

Kempton Park schools learners stood out at the annual Ekurhuleni Academic Excellence Awards, where the executive mayor of the City of Ekurhuleni, Clr Mzwandile Masina, honoured the best-performing matriculants of the Class of 2019.

The function was hosted at Alberton Civic Centre on January 29.

The ceremony focused on awards for best-performing teachers in different subjects, best-performing learners and best-performing schools. The most-improved schools were also acknowledged for their hard work.

Masina congratulated the Class of 2019 and said the City’s investment in learners extended to their tertiary education.

“In advancing our skills development project, we increased our education allocation to R100-million for the Community Bursary Fund. This is a 10-fold increase from the previous years, when the bursary fund was R10-m.

“This increase in our bursary allocation has enabled us to help many young people to realise their dreams of pursuing academic training.”

He also introduced the Executive Mayor’s Tertiary Assistance Fund and said it ensured that deserving learners had a chance to further their studies.

These Kempton Park schools, learners and teachers received awards:

Top LSEN school: Kempton Panorama School

Top LSEN learner: Jaydin Naude Spencer

Best-performing learner overall: Ulrika Smith, Hoërskool Jeugland

Top 15 best-performing matric learners overall (position in brackets): Ulrika Smith from Jeugland (1), Maryna Coetzer from Jeugland (6), Alexandra van Breeman from Jeugland (9)

Best-performing learners in subjects: Ulrika Smith from Jeugland (accounting and English first additional language)

Best-performing teachers in subjects:

• English first additional language – Rae Brodie, Heidi Harmse, Bettie Vivier, Debbie Doman, Liz Nortje (all Hoërskool Kempton Park)

• Information technology: Nicola Merrick (Hoërskool Kempton Park)

Best-performing schools:

1 Hoërskool Kempton Park (220 matrics, 98.18% pass rate, 181 bachelor’s passes, 165 distinctions)

3 Hoërskool Jeugland (shares with Edenvale High School and Boksburg High School; 188 matrics, 96.81% pass rate, 136 bachelor’s passes, 165 distinctions)
