Thembisa artist dreams of teaching his peers

He said he started drawing at the age of 14 and has never looked back.

Aspiring artist Vusi Qwabe (25) from Endulwini Section wants to establish a school of arts for children in his community, free of charge.

It goes without saying that talent is something worth nourishing and exploring, and Qwabe hopes to share his talent with his community.

“I want to share my talent with the people of my community. Most children these days have lost their purpose in life, especially my peers,” said Qwabe.

“The reason I am doing this is because I want the children and the youth to stop roaming the streets. It would really make a difference in terms of them knowing more about art and its value,” he said.

He explained he met his friend, Zama Mofokeng, in Grade Eight, only to find out they were both artists.

“Zama inspires me to keep working hard. He is the reason I am pushing hard and hope to fulfil my dream of opening a school of arts.”

Art should tell a story and capture emotions. Qwabe says his work touches people. He explained that he is currently working on recruiting people in order to start with lessons.

“The only thing delaying me is recruiting people so I can start with the lessons. I already have a place where the lessons will take place.”

He said he started drawing at the age of 14 and has never looked back. He specialises in sketches.

In order to open the school, Qwabe needs all the support he can get. His mom is his biggest supporter and pushes him in everything he does, including his desire to establish a school of arts.

“I hope by the end of the year the people of Endulwini as well as the whole of Thembisa will come for classes. I am trying to reduce drug abuse and school dropout rates,” said Qwabe.

Qwabe mentioned he plans to offer the classes in his residential area. These classes are for children and youth between the ages of five and 25.
