When hijacked, remember this

It is important your family and friends know certain information

In light of the severity in the number of hijackings and the efficiency with which hijackers execute their crime, operations director of Sec Pros, Gerald Groenewald, shares his tips.

• Make sure your family and friends know your car registration number, vehicle brand, colour and car tracking company with contact details. This information will enable agencies arriving on scene to immediately activate any tracking devices in a hijacked vehicle.

• When arriving at home or work, make sure no one is loitering around your driveway and be suspicious of cars parked around you or vehicles driving behind you.

• Always leave yourself an exit passage when turning into your driveway. If you are uncertain of a situation, rather drive past your driveway to be sure you’re not being followed. If you are being followed, call in your security company and get them to meet you at any place close by.

• If you’re caught in a situation in which you’re abducted by hijackers, never put up a fight. They want your car and to get away as soon as possible.

• Always consider the results caused by your actions and wait for the hijackers to leave before seeking help.

• If you have children in the car with you, always make sure your child is accessible, even on the back seat. Remember to keep children calm and tell them everything will be okay.

• Always ensure you remain calm and do what is best in the situation.
