Curro Serengeti teen designer sews it up on reality show
The winner will receive R10 000 cash, as well as a R10 000 educational policy.
Curro Serengeti stands to win an attractive cash prize as one of its learners, Pheladi Phasa, rises to fame competing in the pilot season of Mzansi Magic reality TV show Style Squad.
Presented by style queen Candice Modiselle, the series showcases 10 young and talented designers vying to win their very own clothing range for Ackermans in South Africa, as well as R10 000 cash, a R10 000 educational policy, hampers and more.
Additionally, the school in which the winning participant is enrolled will receive a cash prize of R5 000 donated towards his school.
The Style Squad winner will be announced during the final episode, which will be aired on March 19.
The Style Squad Young Fashion Designer competition, an Ackermans initiative, celebrated its fifth year with the launch of its own reality television show exclusive to Mzansi Magic and Mzansi Wethu.
Ten contestants showcase their creative skills on TV to audiences across Southern Africa as they compete for the two winning spots.
Audiences can see the young contestants tackle various design-related challenges, testing their creativity and fashion knowledge as they vie for the top prize, designing their own ranges under the guidance of leading industry buyers and trends specialists, which will then be sold at Ackermans stores across Southern Africa.
The series features 10 weekly episodes with resident judge and Ackermans marketing specialist Tanya Ruiters, alongside surprise appearances from celebrity guest judges.
Each episode features a different fashion challenge where contestants are awarded points for meeting the set design requirements. However, the highest points only gives them an advantage and does not guarantee a win.
“The Style Squad brand was established to provide a platform for young South African creatives to showcase their design talents,” said Ruiters.
“We’ve seen an increased interest in the number of entries each year. This led us to up the stakes and source a way for them to showcase their talents on a wider stage with more exposure and more opportunities,” explained Ruiters.
A hundred semi-finalists were selected from a nationwide pool of entries. The judges were then tasked with selecting five girls and five boys as the final top 10.
