Troublesome Maraboe Street bar closed down after lengthy battle

The alcohol confiscated is estimated to be worth R200 000.

Alcohol, estimated to be worth R200 000, was confiscated at a Maraboe Street bar on Tuesday.

The alcohol was confiscated during a joint operation between Norkem Park SAPS and the provincial office at the bar in Birch Acres.

“The community has had sleepless nights with the bar and even went as far as drafting a petition for the bar to be closed,” said Sgt Johanna Madiga, spokesperson for Norkem Park SAPS.

“Noise levels and suspected drug use were constantly reported.”

Meetings were also held regarding the bar and Norkem Park SAPS’ liquor officer, Sgt Phuti Maleka, went to the liquor board to make them aware of the community’s concerns.

“Investigations were made and it was discovered that the bar’s liquor licence had expired,” said Madiga.

“Alcohol was confiscated and the bar was also shut down.”

Madiga told Express the liquor was to be destroyed after the confiscation.

The bottle on the same premises was not affected by the operation.
