Coronavirus concerns hit Martin Primary School in Boksburg after the school issued a letter informing parents that one of the people in Gauteng who have contracted Covid-19 is a parent of two children at the school.

This came to the attention of the school and the Department of Education on March 11, according to the issued letter. As soon as the parent went for the test he isolated himself and his family while awaiting the test results.

The department has assigned a team to deal will the matter and are following all protocols in the management of the situation. Both the education and health departments gave the school assurance that there was no need to panic as they were dealing with the matter accordingly.

Boksburg Advertiser contacted the school on Friday morning and a staff member confirmed the letter was issued and that the school was running normally; new developments will be communicated.

The school principal declined to comment further on the issue and referred Boksburg Advertiser to the Gauteng Department of Education.

However, the department’s spokesperson, Steve Mabona’s, phone rang unanswered on Friday morning.

The Advertiser also sent him an email and are still awaiting his response.

After the report, Boksburg Advertiser was inundated with calls from concerned parents who wanted to know what the school was doing to ensure their children were safe.
