New school to be built in Olifantsfontein
The department has budgeted R6.5-million over the next three financial years.
A new primary school to be built in Olifantsfontein will help ease the pressure from Olifantsfontein Primary School, which is the only primary school in Clayville.
The DA in Gauteng has welcomed the announcement by Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi that a new primary school will be built in Olifantsfontein.
The DA said, according to Lesufi, there is land in Clayville Ext 29 that has been identified as a possible site for the construction of the new school.
“The Gauteng Department of Infrastructure Development (DID) has appointed a geotechnical engineer to conduct a comprehensive and conclusive dolomite risk and stability study on the identified land,” said Khume Ramulifho MPL, DA Gauteng shadow MEC for Education. Ramulifho said Lesufi was responding to the DA’s written questions tabled in the Gauteng Legislature.
The department has budgeted the following amounts for the project in the draft Estimate Capital Expenditure 2020/21 financial year:
• 2020/21 financial year: R500 000
• 2021/22 financial year: R1 000 000
• 2022/23: financial year R5 000 000
“With more than 10 new extensions that have been built over the years, the current school is struggling to accommodate all the learners in the area.
“Furthermore, the department has placed an order for three mobile units to be delivered to the school, so that the school can accommodate more learners due to a high demand in the area,” said Ramulifho.
“The DA will monitor the progress of the construction of the new primary school once it begins. We will also do a follow-up visit to ascertain whether the three mobile classrooms have been delivered to the school.”
The Gauteng Department of Education did not respond to queries.
