Strange fungus puzzles Van Riebeeck Park resident

According to her they don’t have a stalk like toadstools and mushrooms

Despite various internet searches, a Van Riebeeck Park resident is still in the dark about a particular “thing” (well, several of them actually) which sprung up in her garden over the past few weeks.

“I have asked a few friends and neighbours if they recognise, or have any idea about, this particular “thing”, which appears to be a type of fungus,” said Sandra Engel.

It grows in flower beds as well as in the lawn.

“Despite their trawling through numerous internet sites, no-one can find anything like it.”

According to her they don’t have a stalk like toadstools and mushrooms, nor a “cap” as such, and are W-A-Y too big to be truffles. “If they were, they’d be worth a fortune,” she joked.

Her flowerbeds were dug over on Friday, March 6. On Tuesday morning one the size of a tennis ball appeared and by Wednesday about three, maybe four times the size.

Another began popping through the soil on Wednesday morning and by Thursday night it was tennis-ball size. “And one wasn’t there last night [Thursday] but it was tennis-ball size this morning [Friday] and still growing,” she added.

According to her no other residents in her vicinity seem to have these appearing in their gardens.
