The Well of Wisdom Book Club International (WOW) had a book session with the learners of Marhulana Primary School on March 14, at Oakmoor Xubene section.
Founder and managing director of WOW Amelia Mikateko Tela said, “We are a group of readers and we meet on a monthly basis to discuss a book and do book reviews. We also launched The Well of Wisdom Junior Book Club in 2018 which mainly focuses on Grade Four to Seven learners,” said Tela.
WOW was established in 2016.
“Our pillars are education, empowerment, effective reading and effective communication. We also aim to build a society of purpose and driven readers.
“I felt like in the townships, people no longer read books. I wanted us to embrace the culture of reading; hence, our vision as an organisation is to build purpose-driven readers.
“We want our readers to read with purpose and understanding. Comprehension shouldn’t be about reading for the sake of reading, but it has to be for a purpose,” said Tela.
Tela added that they are currently catering for both adults and children in their reading programme.
“We would appreciate if people support us as a book club. We are currently partnered with Global Forum of Women entrepreneurs, Marhulana Primary school, Khulasizwe Primary School and Sedibeng Primary School.

“If you would like to volunteer for the project, sponsor us with books and materials you are welcome to do so. Our website is www.wowbookclubint.org.za.
“We are passionate about seeing people being effective in their area of influence, so career people and anyone who is willing to lend a helping hand in shaping the future of the next generation is welcome to join,” said Tela.
Tela mentioned they believe that an effective reader is able to write as well, adding that they also want to produce authors.
“We aim to build authors because we want people to tell their stories,” said Tela.
The learners at Marhulana Primary School came in numbers and participated.
Eleven-year-old Ndzalama Qibi, a Grade Six learner, said, “I have learnt to read fluently ever since the Well of Wisdom Junior Book Club came.
“This programme has helped me in such a way that now, I am more confident when it comes to reading. I now like reading books compared to before.”
