SPCA confiscates 8 pitbulls on street corner amid sale allegations
It is alleged that the male Pit bull was tied to a pole with no water and the female was tied to the bakkie.
Eight pitbulls were confiscated on the corner of Mooirivier Drive and Elgin Road by Kempton Park SPCA on March 12.
Six were four-week-old puppies and the other two a male and female adults.
Members of the society rushed to the scene after receiving a call about people allegedly selling the puppies from the back of a bakkie.
“On arrival, we found two men with the dogs. Fortunately members of Sec Pros Security were there and the men couldn’t leave,” said Kira Sparrow, manager at Kempton Park SPCA.
It is alleged the male pitbull was tied to a pole with no water and the female was tied to the bakkie. Sparrow said the two men were aggressive towards them and evasive about the dogs.
“The male pitbull was also exceptionally aggressive, with badly cropped ears. The female was lactating,” explained Sparrow.
“We don’t want to speculate, however, we believe these men were waiting for someone to look at the puppies for purchase. There was a man who was walking up Soutpansberg Drive with another male pitbull and we stopped and questioned him. When he saw the security vehicles and ours he hurried away. We suspect he was going to look at the puppies for purchase.
“The dogs have been signed over to the SPCA and the police are investigating the matter.”
Sparrow said the two men, seemingly in their mid-20s, were not arrested as there was no evidence they were indeed selling the dogs.
She also advised pet owners, especially those with pitbulls, to sterilise their pets.
“If your dog already has puppies, sterilise your pet afterwards. If you have a lot of puppies and don’t know what to do with them, consider giving them to us as we will ensure there is a pre- and post-home inspection and we will vaccinate and sterilise,” said Sparrow.
“If people just give away and/or sell unsterilised puppies/dogs then the vicious cycle starts all over again.”
