Three suspects were arrested on Tuesday afternoon after various security companies and Kempton Park SAPS responded to the mugging of a woman in Nimrod Park.
A message was sent on a Nimrod Park WhatsApp group by a woman who witnessed the suspects taking the woman’s cellphone after parking their Toyota Corolla on the corner of Eland Road and Njala Street.
According to Sec Pros operations director, Gerald Groenewald, response officer Cobus Heymans was dispatched to the scene. On arrival, Heymans called for back-up when he saw the suspects’ vehicle parked in the enclosure.

“When I reached the corner of Monument and Van Riebeeck roads, four men walking along the road pointed to two of the suspects on the run in Hoërskool Kempton Park’s direction. The police was short on my tail and all of us started chasing them,” Heymans explained.
When they reached the school, both Heymans and the police parked their vehicles and continued the chase on foot.
“One suspect came running around a blind corner. I hit him so hard, he fell to the ground. The police officers caught a second suspect in the school’s bicycle enclosure.”
The third suspect was also arrested by police.
On the scene where the initial incident occurred, security companies and police officers guarded the suspects’ abandoned vehicle. The key was missing and the car locked.
Kempton Park SAPS spokesperson, Sgt Dipuo Ditshego, said one suspect was still at large. The three men arrested will be charged with common robbery.
“The victim didn’t sustain any injuries,” she said.
She said although the vehicle’s registration didn’t match the licence disk, the car was not registered as stolen. It merely had false number plates.
“The police appeal to anyone with information to contact them on 011 393 8600 or 10111.”
