Glen Marikana move reaches stalemate

The landowner will have to return to court after the lockdown.

While over 1 000 Glen Marikana residents had been moved to Putfontein, the remaining about 1 300 will stay for now.

This is not only because of the 21-day lockdown because of Covid-19, but also because they refuse to move.

Ward councillor Jaco Terblanche said the metro had a meeting about the situation on Thursday morning to pave the way forward.

According to Terblanche the metro complied with what the court order required – move the residents. The deadline to have all residents moved is March 31.

“Those still there are the rebels who refuse to relocate,” said Terblanche.

The metro will now meet with the land owner after the 21-day lockdown.

According to Terblanche, the landowner will have to return to court to have the eviction order enforced to have the remaining residents removed.

“This could take anything up to three months,” said Terblanche.
