WATCH: Busy Corner in Tembisa flooded with consumers on first day of lockdown
Some shoppers queued for up to four hours
Kaalfontein and Ebony Park residents rushed to their nearest supermarkets on the first day of lockdown on Friday to stock up on their essentials.
Many residents woke up early to visit Busy Corner Mall in Ebony.
Walking around the mall, only Pick n Pay and the Clicks pharmacy were open. The queue into Pick n Pay was long as security only allowed a certain number of people into the store. Police were present to monitor the situation.
Michael Matlala from Kaalfontein said he got up at 7am to get what they needed.
He said he took the state president’s message very seriously. To avoid anyone catching the virus, he became the loyal servant of the house as he was the only one to leave the house in case they needed something.
“I have a car so traveling becomes easy. Although I did not wear a mask or gloves, I had sanitiser in my pocket to wash my hands.”
“I went out because I needed to get a few goods we couldn’t get yesterday as it was the last day of free movement before the lockdown officially began.”

Juliet Manyoni from Ebony Extension 5 said they saw an opportunity to go shopping today [Friday] and they took it as they plan to lock themselves at home during the lockdown period.
“We have been in the queue to buy what we needed from Pick n Pay as it is the only supermarket open. We have been here since 8am and queued for three and a half to four hours.
“We got our meat, vegetables, milk, oats, canned foods and all the non-perishable food that will last long with or without electricity, because we constantly face that challenge.”
