Police officer injured during stampede at Birch Acres Mall
A stampede broke out in Birch Acres Mall as consumers attempted to enter stores to stock up essential items.
Chaos has once again erupted at Birch Acres Mall on Tuesday morning as residents flocked to the mall to buy essential items amid the lockdown.
A stampede ensued when consumers attempted to enter the mall in large numbers, despite security personnel allowing only small groups inside the mall.
According to Norkem Park police spokesperson Sgt Johanna Madiga, the police were deployed to the mall and managed to diffuse the commotion.
A Norkem Park female police patrol officer was injured after she was pushed to the ground while trying to get consumers in order.
“It’s been three days deploying our officers to Birch Acres mall because consumers are not complying with the lockdown rules. The stampede is so bad.
“In the Norkem Park precinct, the only problem we have is with this mall, otherwise residents are adhering to the lockdown and social distancing instructions,” said Madiga.
