Many surrender their pets to Kempton Park SPCA

The office team will be on site from Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 12.30pm and closed on weekends.

While keeping its doors open under difficult measures, Kempton Park SPCA is now also faced with another battle – residents surrendering their pets to the society, creating a greater need for pet food.

“It may be due to financial situations or fears of misinformation about animals regarding the coronavirus,” said Kira Sparrow, manager of the society.

“As such, we have more animals coming into our care and they need to be fed. We appeal to residents to donate food.

“Due to our charity shop being closed, no walk-in donations and all planned fund-raisers cancelled or postponed, we are faced with a dire situation.

Yet, Kempton Park SPCA remains open for emergencies only during the nationwide lockdown. Emergencies include stray and injured animals, as well as cruelty cases.

Sparrow said a number of operations were put on hold, including adoptions, volunteering, vaccinations, deworming, dipping and sterilisation.”

Although the charity shop is closed, Sparrow appeals to the community to consider donating once in full operation again.

“Consider donating your unwanted items to our charity shop for resale to help generate much-need funds,” explained Sparrow.

“The money generated from our charity shop goes towards our exorbitant vet bills.”

The society operates on skeleton staff. The office team is on site from Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 12.30pm. They are closed on weekends.

“Reclaiming of strays is still conducted and the normal process is applicable. We request photographs to prove ownership of the missing animal and for us to identify it is in our kennels. Collections will be conducted by appointment only.

“One of our precautionary measures is limited travel. We only collect stray animals, however, if you are able to bring the animal in to our branch, it will assist us.”

People are welcome to donate via EFT.

“Our core business is prevention of cruelty to animals and this will be conducted throughout this time. We ask for your assistance, patience and understanding.

“We have staff on site to care, feed and love the animals over this period, as well as ensure their safety and health.

“Abandonment is a crime. Should you not be able to care for your pets any longer, surrender them to the SPCA. The emergency line is 079 509 7859 and is in full operation.
