Benoni Flying Squad comes out tops in Gauteng

Benoni Flying Squad will continue in its efforts in combating crime in all areas it serves.

Benoni Flying Squad, which also covers Kempton Park, has arrested 1 166 suspects across Gauteng and recovered 442 vehicles from April 1 last year until March 31 this year.

According to flying squad spokesperson WO Grant Giblin, members arrested these suspects for crimes ranging from domestic violence, assault, theft, shoplifting, counterfeit goods, possession of stolen goods, damage to property, robbery, murder, possession of endangered species, fraud, housebreaking, possession of explosives, driving under the influence of alcohol, crimen injuria, escaping from lawful custody, public violence, illegal mining, sexual harassment, trespassing, attempted cash-in-transit heists and rape.

Furthermore, 200 stolen vehicles were recovered with 78 arrests made in these incidents, while 242 hijacked vehicles were recovered with 47 arrests.

Officers also recovered 96 firearms with 73 arrests made. Two hundred and twenty-six suspects were arrested for drug-related charges.

Members participated in 1 911 vehicle checkpoints as well as regular crime prevention operations throughout Gauteng, searched and tested in excess of 40 000 vehicles and 101 124 persons.

“All these successes came from dedication, commitment, hard work, investigation and community participation, making Benoni Flying Squad the most successful unit out of all seven Gauteng flying squads on arrests and seizures per operational member. This emphasises the importance of the relationship with the community,” said Giblin.

Lt Col Tali Lukhele, commander of Benoni Flying Squad, thanked members and encouraged them to keep up the good work, especially in this difficult period.
