Thembisa High one of 19 schools in Gauteng broken into and vandalised

A 26-year-old suspect was arrested for allegedly breaking into Thembisa High School recently.

There have been a couple of burglaries in schools since the commencement of the lockdown, and Thembisa High School is one of them.

It is alleged that a 26-year-old male suspect was arrested by police after members of the community caught him stealing, after he broke into the school.

Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson Steve Mabone said: “The Gauteng MEC, Panyaza Lesufi, is delighted about the arrest that took place on April 8.”

He added that the suspect was arrested after community members alerted the police that there was a person stealing at Thembisa High School. Upon arrival, the police apprehended him.

“We have reported on April 8 that about 21 criminal activities occurred at different schools since the commencement of the lockdown,” said Mabona.

He added that the criminals broke into and vandalised about 19 schools in Gauteng.

“It is concerning that the latest breaks-ins take us to a total of 40 criminal activities since the beginning of the lockdown period,” said Mabona.

He said valuable equipment and school nutrition groceries were stolen during the burglaries.

“We would like to thank the community members, especially those who played a significant role in protecting our school by alerting the police about criminals,” concluded Mabona.
