Driver killed as bakkies collide on the N1 south

It is believed the small bakkie had broken down in the middle of the highway

One man was killed and another injured when a bakkie rear-ended another on the N1 south-bound in Midrand on Wednesday.

ER24 paramedics, along with other services, arrived on the scene shortly after 11am to find a small, wrecked bakkie on the left-hand side of the highway, while a second bakkie was found in the fast lane, said Russel Meiring, spokesperson for ER24.

Medics assessed the patients and found the driver of the small bakkie had sustained fatal injuries. Nothing could be done for him and he was declared dead.

The driver of the second vehicle was assessed and found to have sustained moderate injuries. The man was treated and transported to a nearby hospital by another service.

It is believed the small bakkie had broken down in the middle of the highway. The driver had climbed out of the vehicle and was struck by the second bakkie.

Local authorities were on the scene for further investigations.
