Couple safely escapes home gutted by fire on Saturday
The couple was treated on scene by paramedics before being transported to Tembisa Hospital.
A Jacaranda Street couple lost almost everything they own when their house burned down on Saturday night.
Disaster and Emergency Management Services spokesperson William Ntladi confirmed they were summoned to the scene around 7.30pm.
He said the house owners sustained minor burn wounds to their hands and suffered smoke inhalation.
“According to them, they sustained their injuries while trying to extinguish the fire before it was out of control,” Ntladi stated.
The couple was treated on scene by paramedics before being transported to Tembisa Hospital.
Ntladi said part of the roof had already collapsed by the time they arrived. Shortly after the arrival of the first fire engine, backup from Commercia Fire Station arrived to assist.
The fire had been extinguished by 9.30pm.
On assessment, a large section of the roof was damaged by the fire, as well as the lounge, dining room and two bedrooms.
“Some salvaged furniture in the lesser affected rooms such as in the kitchen, sustained water and smoke damage.”
Recognition was extended to SSS Security and Sec Pros for their assistance at the scene.
The cause of the fire is not yet known.
