KTVR donates food relief parcels to Thembisa residents
Among the food were 12kg maize meals, 2-litre cooking oil, 5 packs of 1kg soup, tinned food, 2kg sugar and a pack of rice.
KTVR buses donated 300 food parcels worth of R300 000 to Thembisa residents as part of their food relief programme on May 7.
Residents were invited to Chloorkop depot where they were given gloves, masks, and sanitised before handed over their food packages.
Buti Mahlangu public relations director of KTVR said they donated to 300 families from Thembisa, which were identified from Ward 13 and Ward 100.
“We decided to supply at least those from squatter camps because they are first hand regarded as the poor.
“We never had a budget for Covid-19 because this is new to all of us. We donated about R300 000 of food because we operate from Thembisa area. It was easy for us to spot those poor areas,” said Mahlangu.
Pelisa Nkunjana MMC for Transport in Ekurhuleni said they are here to support the initiative by KTVR.
“KTVR is our biggest stakeholder in the CoE particularly in the Department of Transport. They distribute food to families in need during this crisis.
“We are here to support them in making sure that they comply with lockdown regulations while feeding the hungry. We are making sure everyone wears a mask, gloves and they practice social distancing,” said Nkunjana.
Doctor Mtshali, the chairperson of KTVR, said they are working towards planning a second hand-over which will be planned with the KTVR board.
“From what we have done we are going to see what more can be done. Today we had designed vouchers which were handed over to recipients and they used the vouchers to collect their food parcels,” said Mtshali.
