NPO urges single moms to come forward
Her focus with the project is to create awareness surrounding the emotional distress women face.
Being a single mother during lockdown could be hard.
NPO Under His Covering has launched a project, Surviving and Thriving as Single Moms, said the NPO’s Carike Pretorius.
“A single mom’s parenting duties are no different than they are for a married mom, except for the reality that you are on your own. We want to hear from single mothers in Kempton Park who are facing difficulties during Covid-19,” said Pretorius.
This project will run with Under His Covering’s food parcel project. The organisation has the proper permits to collect and distribute food parcels during lockdown.
She placed emphasis on helping single moms who face financial and emotional hurdles. Pretorius’ aim is to create a platform for single moms to tell their stories and seek a network of fellow single mothers.
Her focus with the project is to create awareness surrounding the emotional distress women face.
“Emotional pain includes feeling unworthy or worthless, disapproved of, invalidated, rejected, not listened to or understood, feeling invisible, unloved, neglected, insulted, disparaged, disrespected, distrusted, devalued or discounted, aggressed against, taken advantage of, betrayed, inadequate, defective, incompetent, behind the curve, inferior or looked down upon, unacceptable, to name a few.”
Pretorius urges women to be kind to themselves.
“Cut yourself some slack when something unfortunate, like losing a job, going through a breakup or experiencing trauma, happens. Trying to squash the stress or grief will only intensify those feelings. Allow yourself to feel and show yourself the same compassion and support you would give someone else.”
