WATCH: Alleged cigarette fight leads to shack fire in Glen Marikana
Only the shack and surroundings items burned and no injuries were reported.
One shack burned down at Glen Marikana informal settlement on Dann Road in Glen Marais on Sunday night.
“We are not sure what exactly happened but from what we heard, it appears the shack owner and another person were arguing over cigarettes,” said Ntanganedzeni Netshisiinzhe, one of the community leaders at the settlement.
Netshisiinzhe told Kempton Express on Monday afternoon that the owner had not returned to Glen Marikana since the incident.
“We hope he would come back so he could tell us what happened,” said Netshisiinzhe.
Netshisiinzhe said they were aided in extinguishing the blaze by Smart Security Services (SSS) and Sec Pros Security.
“We got the call from a resident on a Glen Marais Telegram group,” said Gerald Groenewald from Sec Pros Security.
“A photo was posted and they said they heard a gunshot coming from the settlement. On arrival we found one shack on fire, only to discover that the gunshot sounds were aerosol cans and bottles exploding.
“It was a joint effort with SSS and together the fire was extinguished. The fire didn’t spread due to the space between the shacks and the metal sheeting that doesn’t burn that easy.”
Only the shack and surroundings items burned and no injuries were reported.
