Ivory Park is hot spot for non-compliance: 40 cases identified
If residents do not comply, Ivory Park could be moved to level 5, warns premier
Gauteng Premier David Makhura had identified Ivory Park as a hot spot for non-compliance to lockdown regulations during his visit to Busy Corner Mall on May 13.
He announced that at least 40 cases of Covid-19 had been identified in Ivory Park.
Makhura, accompanied by the MEC of Health in Gauteng, Dr Bandile Masuku, and the MMC of Health in the City of Johannesburg, Eunice Mgcina, visited malls in Gauteng on this day to assess lockdown regulations followed at shopping centres.
They also assessed over-pricing of food items and maintenance of food security standards.
Earlier that day they visited Soshanguve Mall before making another stop in Ivory Park. Testing and screening of Covid-19 were also conducted at the mall.
The premier said if mallgoers were found to be positive, the patient would be contacted and isolated from the public. Hundreds of people waited their turn to screen and test at several malls visited.
Makhura noted that though some were following regulations, others in the area weren’t. He strongly warned the people of Ivory Park that they shouldn’t think Covid-19 was not a virus for the township people.
“We are monitoring Ivory Park and Soshanguve closely. We don’t want Covid-19 to spread out of control in Ivory Park.
“If people don’t comply and the number of infections increase, we will localise a level five lockdown and make it difficult for people to move around,” Makhura said.
