Explosives found in taxi stopped on the R21

The explosives were discovered while searching a passenger's bag

Explosives, often used in cash-in-transit heists, ATM bombings and illegal mining, were discovered in a taxi stopped on the R21 on Sunday.

W/O Grant Giblin, spokesperson for Benoni Flying Squad, said officers were conducting a vehicle check point at the Engen 1-Stop around 10am when a taxi with the driver and five passengers were pulled over.

“One passenger was found with a red bag and upon searching the bag, members found three packs of commercial explosives as well as three detonation cords. The man had no permits for these explosives and was arrested,” said Giblin.
