Mazibuko threatens to close down Kopanong Shopping Centre

One shop was even using surface disinfectant to sanitise people entering the store.

Gauteng provincial commissioner Lt-Gen Elias Mawela led Operation Okae Molao accompanied by MEC of Safety Faith Mazibuko in Ivory Park on May 21.

Soon after leaving Ivory Park Police Station, heading to Kopanong Shopping Centre, they found a man in possession of cigarettes. He was arrested immediately.

The MEC said Kopanong Shopping Centre was non-compliant to lockdown regulations and one shop was selling expired meat.

“Walking around we found that some shops were complying fully, but other shops weren’t. The one shop was even using surface sanitiser to sanitise people entering the store. One shop sold meat that expires in two years’ time, which puzzles me.”

Mazibuko added that Ivory Park is one of the hot spot townships.

“People from this area must understand that now there is a new normal. People should comply with the regulations.

“This shopping centre has a leak, other shops don’t have thermometres or a book to record that employees are tested daily. Sanitisers only are not enough. Shops must decontaminate and screen their workers.

“The provincial government has its focus on raising awareness in townships and making sure people comply.”

In addition, Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga has announced that matrics and Grade Sevens will resume classes on June 1. Mazibuko also shared some insights on the progress to keep learners safe on their return.

Soldiers and law enforcement officers were seen patrolling the township.

“School management teams are at schools cleaning and sanitising everything. MEC Panyaza Lesufi has indicated marshals will make sure rules are followed,” Mazibuko said.

“Teachers will also have their protective gear to make sure they are safe. The number of learners in class will be cut into smaller numbers to have enough space to distance even in the class.

“The children are parading the streets of townships, so let them return to school and continue their education,” concluded Mazibuko.
