Fire destroys 12 vehicles at business

Twelve cars were destroyed in a fire at a business establishment near Glen Balad Mall on Friday morning last week.

According to Simphiwe Dube, Kempton Park Fire Station’s new station manager, the fire started at a workshop on the premises where the 12 vehicles were parked.

“We received a call about the fire at around 10am and upon arrival found the workshop was well alight,” said Dube.

“We found Sec Pros Security’s tactical fire unit on scene, who were helping out with the fire.”

The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage. Dube said one of the employees told him they saw smoke coming from the workshop and started calling for help.

There were five fire engines from Kempton Park, Thembisa, Leon Ferreira (Boksburg) and Farrarmere (Benoni) fire stations.

“Kempton Park was the first to arrive and the backup from other stations arrived afterwards,” said Dube.

“An ambulance was also on scene and treated one patient for a minor injury to his leg. There was no need for him to be transported to hospital.”

Smart Security Services personnel were also on scene and Dube said it took about an hour to extinguish the blaze that engulfed and completely destroyed the 12 vehicles.

Sec Pros personnel and Dube told Express some of the vehicles that were parked near the workshop were removed, using a forklift, while others were driven away from the scene. The workshop’s roof had already started caving in.

When standing a metre from the workshop, one could feel the heat from inside and on the remaining walls and smell the soot after the fire was extinguished.
