Two grannies celebrate birthday with Clr Phillip Thamahane

Two grannies celebrated their birthdays on June 1 in Kgatlamping section, Thembisa, with PR Cllr Philip Thamahane of the Democratic Alliance (DA).

Both gogos were treated to gifts from Thamahane.

Gogo Emily Ratsaka turned 104 and Gogo Elizabeth Moloi 93.

“I had promised the two grannies I would throw them both a big party, but due to the lockdown I could not keep to that promise. Instead, I decided to still do something for them even though it is not a big party,” said Thamahane.

Thamahane said when he heard about Gogo Ratsaka, he had wanted to meet her and do something for her.

“I had just gotten donations of food parcels for Bedfordview SPAR when I heard about Gogo Emily, so decided to give her those food parcels.”

He said that was when he decided he was going to throw the two gogos a party. Thamahane said he met Gogo Elizabeth when they were giving out food parcels.

“Whenever I see people at this age I am reminded of my grandmother. Growing up I was my granny’s child. Being able to do something for both of them and seeing their smiles makes me happy.”

The celebration was also attended by Khathutshelo Ralisingwane, the DA Shadow MMC for Health and Social Development, and Clr Malcolm Maifala of the DA in Bedfordview.

Ralisingwane was overseeing social distancing protocols. The grannies were happy that Thamahane had kept his promise to celebrate their birthday with him.

Gogo Emily said she was happy and thankful to Thamahane.

“I am thankful and happy for this day. I would not have been here had it been not for God, I am grateful for everything,” she said.

Gogo Elizabeth said respecting the elders and God-fearing has kept her alive. She added that eating healthily has kept her this healthy and alive.

“Clr Thamahane planned this celebration for me, even though I thought is wouldn’t be possible. I am thankful to him and his team,” she said.
