Beloved Kempton Golf Club member dies after armed robbery at club
Three other men were also assaulted by the armed attackers
A much-loved Kempton Park Golf Club member of many years died in Thembisa Hospital in the early hours of Thursday morning after being wounded in an armed robbery at the club on Tuesday morning.
Mike Sebanz (52) was wounded in the stomach when a group of armed men broke into the club where he and Steven Roughton (39) were sleeping in the bar. Roughton was assaulted during the incident.

Condolences have been pouring in on social media since the news of his death became known on Thursday morning.
Head of marketing and member of the club’s executive committee Anton Potgieter on Thursday said: “We just received the tragic news that Mike didn’t make it through the night. Everyone loved that man and looked up to him. It is extremely sad for all.”
Potgieter said seven armed men stormed into the club’s lounge while Sebanz and Roughton were sleeping. They had been sleeping at the club since the start of the lockdown to take care of the greens and facilities.
The men overpowered two greens staff members, Sipho and Sylvester, and demanded to be directed to the bar. Both men were beaten and tied up.

When Mike woke up, he spoke out loudly and was shot, said Potgieter. “Luckily, Steven still had his wits about him and managed to trigger the alarm.”
Roughton told Express only after Mike was shot, he could react. “I was knocked out. They just left Mike on the floor while they looted the club. When I came around they dragged me to where Mike was lying. I do not know for how long I was unconscious,” said Roughton.
An ambulance arrived and transported Sebanz to Thembisa Hospital.

Capt Jethro Mtshali, spokesperson for Kempton Park SAPS, on Wednesday said the Ekurhuleni District Task Team was investigating a case of a business robbery which occurred at 1.30am. A charge of murder will now be added.
“The suspects robbed the bar of televisions mounted to the walls, a sound system, four computers and monitors and cell phones.”
No-one has been arrested. Msthali appealed to anyone with information to contact the police on 08600 10111.
