Seasoned policeman takes over at Norkem Park SAPS
He wants to improve community relations and ensure the police give proper service delivery to the community
The new station commander’s appointment at Norkem Park SAPS has been quite a transition for him as he hails from the Winterveld in Pretoria.
Col Johannes Maseku Tau (53) started on May 25.
“The Norkem Park police precinct is very big which could be a concern if one takes traffic and the volume of crime into account. However, he said change might be on the horizon.

“I learned the area stretching from Birchleigh North to Greenfields would be swallowed by Thembisa SAPS soon, which will allow us to concentrate on our area from Esselen Park to Festival Mall.”
When asked about his proudest moments in his career, he said: “One morning early, while driving with my wife to work, a man saw my police car and reported that someone had robbed him. He identified the guys and pointed to a group of five men standing nearby.
“It was an armed house robbery. I turned back without thinking twice and the suspects ran off. I left my wife in an idling car and chased one guy down the street. He turned, took out his firearm and tried to shoot me.
“I fired first. He dropped his firearm and collapsed within the next 100m. He was wounded in the ribs.”
A few months later the matter went to court and the suspect was sentenced to six years imprisonment for possession of an unlicensed firearm and other six years for the house robbery.

Tau told Express a bit more about his hometown in Mabopane. “Everyone in my community was respectful, recognised the police and the laws.”
He is a seasoned policeman with 31 years service, following his official training at Hammanskraal Police Training College.
Tau said he was met by a formidable and hardworking team. The creed he wants to endorse with his new team include: “Respect to be respected and always humble yourself, love and enjoy your work.”
He wants to improve community relations and ensure the police give proper service delivery to the community according to Batho Pele principles.
“I’m willing and looking forward to working with anybody in the community, be it councillors, community leaders and security companies; anybody who is willing to come to our assistance.”
