President Cyril Ramaphosa’s most recent address opened the way for the resumption of sporting activities which includes the local soccer league.
Appearing before the media, PSL Chairman Dr. Irvin Khoza Khoza announced that the season will kick-off on the weekend of 9/10 October, 2020. Ordinarily the South African football season will end in mid-May‚ with the playoffs extending to early June. The kick-off of the new season is normally in early to mid-August. The 2020-21 season will be compressed‚ but this will not be for the first time in South Africa. The 2009-10 season preceding the hosting of the 2010 FIFA World Cup ended in February. The 2020–21 South African Premier Division season (known as the ABSA Premiership for sponsorship reasons) will be the 25th season of the Premier Soccer League since its establishment in 1996. Dr. Khoza also took time to highlight various aspects of the game which touched on sponsorship and the covid-19 conditions under which the games will be played.
