Murder case postponed again

The case of murder-accused Deon Jansen van Rensburg was yet again postponed at the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Thursday morning.

The case of murder-accused Deon Jansen van Rensburg was yet again postponed at the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Thursday morning.

Deon is accused of the murder of his wife Karien. The case was postponed to November 24, pending post-mortem results.

Jansen van Rensburg is accused of severely assaulting his wife on August 5 last year. She died in hospital on August 18, 2019.

According to Capt Jethro Mtshali, spokesperson for Kempton Park SAPS, Karien, who was in a coma upon admission into hospital until her death, had multiple injuries suggestive of assault. The initial charge of attempted murder changed to murder.

Jansen van Rensburg was granted R10 000 bail in Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court in August 2019.

Although Karien died on August 18, she was declared brain dead on Women’s Day (August 9).

The death of Karien has been hard on her family and friends, but her mother, Elsie Lubbe, said they are staying strong.

“This has been hard on all of us and we still miss her even after a year since her passing,” said Lubbe.

“It is challenging, but we believe and pray that with time it will get better.”

Karien was described as a soft and kind person. She was a Glen Marais resident and a mother of two sons, who were 13 and 17 at the time of her death. The youngest was diagnosed with Down syndrome and lives with Lubbe. He is in a wheelchair and can’t talk properly.

He only makes sounds and talks with his hands.

Members of #ComeIn and Democratic Alliance Women’s Network (Dawn) were seen supporting and demonstrating outside the court last Thursday.

“Our family and friends always travel from far to show their support and we had more people supporting us this time. It really means a lot to us and we appreciate the support,” expressed Lubbe.
