Deserving young artists honoured with awards
Sir Pierre Van Ryneveld High School’s visual arts contest winners announced. The competition was designed especially for schoolchildren, providing them with a unique opportunity to receive formal recognition.
Hiteka Kitchen recently hosted a virtual contest to promote healthy eating among learners at Sir Pierre Van Ryneveld High School, as well as help emerging visual artists to launch their careers.
The competition was designed especially for schoolchildren, providing them with a unique opportunity to receive formal recognition.
Labani Mgimeti, who also runs a local high school tuck shop, responded to a pressing need for action to help learners stay active during lockdown.
“It has even become more important to empower youth in the context of Covid-19.
“The youth are the most targeted when it comes to marketing of unhealthy food. They are vulnerable and they are still learning a lot about themselves, and peer pressure is the order of the day.
“Today’s youth will be tomorrow’s adults suffering from diabetes, obesity and hypertension and most can’t even afford medical care. We can break the generational curse by empowering the youth with information and knowledge on why it is important to be mindful about what they consume.”
The Hiteka Kitchen Art Competition saw learners create an art piece from fruits and the winners received meal vouchers to the value of R1 000 to buy healthy lunch at school.
