An alleged ATM bombing suspect was arrested in Thembisa on September 2 after EMPD Northern Region Task Team officers received information about a group allegedly involved in ATM bombings.

According to EMPD media liaison officer Thabiso Makgato, officers conducted an operation in Makhulong Section, Thembisa, where they apprehended a male suspect.

Makgato said the suspect was found in possession of dye-stained cash, which is suspected to have been taken during an ATM bombing in Olievenhoutbosch.

He added that during questioning, the suspect allegedly told officers that he had more money hidden and was attempting to clean it.

He then led officers to a residence in Kanana Section, Thembisa, where members recovered explosives and an undisclosed amount of dye-stained cash.

Relevant role players, including the SAPS, Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC), Bomb Disposal Unit and Explosives Unit, were called to the scene.

The suspect was detained at Rabie Ridge SAPS and faces charges relating to the possession of explosives in terms of the Explosives Act, as well as possession of suspected stolen property and dye-stained cash.

He is expected to appear before the relevant magistrate’s court soon.

The investigation into the alleged ATM bombing and the suspect’s possible links to other incidents is ongoing.
