Mother Christmas visits John Wesley Home for Girls

The cheery mood was accompanied by a talk about gender-based violence (GBV) to empower the girls with knowledge about the dangers that lurk and exactly how lockdown affected GBV stats.

Mother Christmas (a bearded Heidi Kruger from Alpha Security and Alarms) brightened the girls from John Wesley Home’s Wednesday by handing out gifts donated by various entities.

The home’s decorated tree was erected alongside Mother Christmas’ chair from where she gave every girl a luxurious black Emperor’s Palace blanket along with a sparkly gift bag filled with essential goodies like perfume, toiletries and sanitary items.

The girls were overjoyed, each wearing their own Santa hat, as they relished in cupcakes, snacks, and other treats while showing off their gifts.

“GBV is an issue that has lasting effects on everybody – be it women, men and children,” said Kruger while she addressed the girls.

“While women and girls are predominantly targeted, it is a cycle of violence that feeds into families, tragically continuing to affect the lives of others if left unidentified and unaddressed.”

Kruger also pointed out that the national statistics pertaining to domestic violence or GBV have tripled while victims were in lockdown with their abusers.

The home’s manager, Welheminah Ramanna, told Express at the event that these charitable festivities meant a great deal.

“Now our children are privileged and they really look up to those who take the time and pay a visit for Christmas. Some of them are far away from their known relatives and this is something that is much appreciated.

“This has put the smiles on their faces as is highly apparent – they are so happy,” Ramanna said.

Emperor’s Palace was thanked for their donation of fuzzy blankets, Hannes Volschenk for the initiative, Lorna Enslin, Tyres and More Boksburg and the Oos-Rand Sake Vroue.
