St George’s Home aims to empower youth
The organisation believes that all children deserve a future and a voice as it works to give children the opportunity to learn and thrive in the safest environment possible through its various programmes.
The St George’s Home is an NPO that strives to improve the lives of children and the youth by providing for their needs.
With its focus on vulnerable and impoverished children, the home implements comprehensive strategies to address any needs.
According to Doreen Maigurira, programme manager at St George’s, the life campus programme caters for young people between the ages of 14 to 18. The home is situated in Kempton Park.
The programme focuses on affording youth the opportunity to develop the relevant skills they need to survive in today’s society and to become law-abiding and productive members of their communities.
The programme seeks to help children discover their inner strengths, recognise their own potential and identify the opportunities available to help them overcome life’s challenges.

The programme offers hope and encouragement that they can take the next step in their lives.
“The life campus programme provides a clean, safe and structured environment for abused, neglected, abandoned, behaviourally or academically challenged young people who are in need of out-of-home placement,” said Maigurira.
“The programme is dedicated to helping these young people to reach their greatest potential with strong emphasis on providing quality care and love so that these young people have an opportunity to experience a stable foundation to build a wholesome, healthy and independent life.
“The programme also aims to meet in a planned way the physical, educational, emotional, spiritual, health and social needs of each young person that is admitted.
Open days are hosted to inform the community about the different programmes that are offered, which include teaching young people to be independent.
“We conduct programmes to raise awareness regarding HIV, drugs, teenage pregnancies, conflict and anger management and many other life skills.
“Therapeutic programmes are provided to the young people to help them cope with their past traumas and also their day to day challenges. Young people are also taught skills in arts and craft work, woodwork, gardening, sewing and beadwork.”
