7 ways to help you get up early in the New Year
Finding it hard to get up in the morning after the holidays? Why not try some of these simple tricks.
Steve Jobs once said: “I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: ‘If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?’ And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.” Getting up early, feeling bright and fresh is an ability not everybody possesses. While some people manage to do it regularly, the rest of us mere mortals out there might need a little help, especially after the festive season. Mornings are always better when you have had a good night’s rest. Here are some life hacks that might help you get up early a little better.
1. Drink water before you go to bed
Drink a glass of water before you go to bed so that you do not get dehydrated while you sleep. The water will keep you rejuvenated and relaxed.
2. Sleep in total darkness
The sleep hormone, melatonin is produced in the dark so make sure you cancel out any kind of light (including that cellphone) when you go to bed. This will help you sleep a lot better.
3. Make sure your alarm is across the room
Place your alarm across the room so that you do not have the opportunity to hit the snooze button when it goes off in the morning.
4. Put your phone to sleep
Many people struggle with letting go of their phone when they go to bed. Sometimes it is best to put your phone on sleep mode far from your bed. If you use your phone as an alarm, this might also help you get up to switch it off in the morning.
5. Read a book (not online)
Reading a book before you go to bed can be relaxing. It can get your mind off the day’s stress and also make you tired enough to fall asleep if you struggle with that.
6. Plan an exciting breakfast
Food might be the best motivation to get you up every morning. Switch up your breakfast routine by adding food items that you love. Fibre, fruit, yoghurt and protein are some of the items that you can add to kick start the day.
7. Start the day with your most important priorities
Scheduling your most important or exciting plans for early in the day might help keep the blues at bay, at least until lunchtime.
