CoE urges parents not to panic during the cold weather

“Children under the age of six are not tested for Covid-19 as they are only considered carriers of the virus.”

In light of the recent cold, rainy and wet weather, the City of Ekurhuleni urged parents and guardians to remain calm when seeking Covid-19-related treatment for their children.

Acting spokesperson for the City Zweli Dlamini said health practitioners recently noted concerns from parents who wanted children presenting flu-like symptoms to be tested for Covid-19.

“Testing a child for Covid-19 depends on the child’s age and whether the child has been in close contact with a person who has tested positive for Covid-19,” said Dlamini.

“The concern with children is that they may spread the virus to people who are at greater risk for severe illness, such as older adults and people with underlying conditions such as diabetes.

“Children under the age of six are not tested for Covid-19 as they are only considered carriers of the virus.”
To prevent the spread of the virus to children, health practitioners encourage parents to practice social distancing and hand hygiene.

However, children older than six years are tested. The City of Ekurhuleni offers free Covid-19 screening for individuals older than six at all its healthcare facilities.
