Community safety to hold SAPS accountable
The department is mandated to monitor police conduct and oversee the effectiveness and efficiency of their service, including receiving reports on the police service.
Residents should make use of the police complaints management system to improve service delivery at local stations. The Gauteng Department of Community Safety hopes the system will improve service delivery within all the ranks of law enforcement in Gauteng.
The police fraternity has been marred by incidents of inefficiency with complaints ranging from poor service delivery, poor investigation, poor response times, missing dockets, lack of feedback, unprofessional conduct, abuse of power and police inaction among others.
The department can under section 206 (3) (a-d) of the Constitution and the Civilian Secretariat for Police Act 2 of 2011 to perform oversight functions at a station in the province.
The department is also mandated to monitor police conduct and oversee the effectiveness and efficiency of their service, including receiving reports on the police service.
The department is duty-bound to investigate and recommend remedial actions on any complaint received from members of the public regarding poor police service, fraud and corruption at any of the 143 police stations in the province.

“The department encourages a climate of professionalism within the ranks of law enforcement and call upon the law enforcement agencies to discharge their duties diligently and with caution.
“In recent times, the department has been hard at work educating the members of the public and encouraging them to report unresolved cases,” said the department’s spokesperson, Ofentse Morwane.
“It is critical that as part of improving service delivery the police are held to account at all times. The department will continue to hold the police accountable to improve the service by continuing with the deployment of officials to police stations regularly to conduct dockets audit, resulting in quality in the investigation of cases,” said Morwane.
Community members can report poor police service on 011 689 3607 or SMS/WhatsApp to 071 853 1306. Alternatively, residents are encouraged to direct complaints to police.complaints@gauteng.gov.za or visit the website.
