Sporting events are picking up and this year will mark the 56th consecutive year of the National Formula Vee Championship. The hype suggests that it’ll be the best one to date by offering the best in single-seater open-wheel racing in South Africa. With plenty of highlights for the pre-season, the series sees new title sponsors in DOE Quality Parts, StartMyCar and 1st Race & Bridgestone who will be on board this year.
The season kicked off between March 12 and 13 at Zwartkops Raceway with the Regional Extreme Festival. The event featured four of Kempton’s very own racers, namely Ben Pienaar, Shaun van der Linde, Jannie Geyser and Kyle Watt.
“Race one of nine boasted a hefty field of 22 entries. It was joined by newcomers, old-timers, multiple-time champions and drivers travelling from all over the country. What’s more, is newly crowned 2020 national champion Lushen Ramchander entertained and competed for wheel-to-wheel in one of the biggest fields SA single-seaters have seen in a long time,” said chairperson of the association Theodore Vermaak.

Vermaak said that the 2021 season has some regulation changes. One of them being Bridgestone 15 semi-slick tyres bringing the close racing even tighter throughout the field (and to help with those wet racing days).
“The association will be building on the strong year it had in 2020 and bring new prizes and trophies to drivers and give members recognition where it is due. The team effort from the committee, drivers, members, guests and sponsors fill the series with ongoing strength, drive, passion, perseverance and love for the sport.”
A typical weekend at the races sees a flag flailing on Fridays with 20-minute three-to-four practice runs each. Saturday mornings mark qualification rounds, which determine each racer’s starting position in the line-up of two races that day.
“During qualifying rounds, we record each racer’s quickest performance time and they kick off in those positions in race one. For the second race, we take the driver’s second quickest time recorded during the qualifying round, which then determines their take-off spots.”
The itinerary for the remaining season is as follows:
• 14/15 May at Phakisa Freeway in Vrystaat
• 18/19 June at Zwartkops Raceway in Gauteng
• 9/10 July at Red Star Raceway in Mpumalanga

• 3/4 September at Killarney Raceway in Western Cape
• 8/9 October at Aldo Scribante in Eastern Cape
